MOVE UNDER DIRECT FIRE

5 min / 100-meter route

Conditions: You are a member of a team conducting movement to contact and are under fire from an enemy position 200 meters away.

Understanding This Task

You must traverse a 100-meter course using three movement techniques based on the terrain and enemy fire. The lane generally progresses: rush (open area, need speed), high crawl (good cover but can't stand), low crawl (minimal cover, close to enemy).

Using the wrong technique for the situation = NO-GO. You must read the terrain and enemy fire to choose correctly.

Common NO-GO Mistakes

  • Wrong technique for the circumstances = NO-GO
  • Rush longer than 3-5 seconds
  • High crawl: knees not behind buttocks
  • Low crawl: body not flat, weapon touching ground
  • Crossing in front of team members

Task Basis: 071-COM-0502

Timer: 5 Minutes

Critical Notes
  • Rush: 3-to-5 second rushes. Vary timing.
  • Using incorrect technique for the circumstances = NO-GO.
  • Maintain weapon control throughout all movements.

PERFORMANCE MEASURES

0/5 GO
  1. 1

    Select appropriate route

    • Search terrain for firing positions: trees, rocks, structures, folds in ground.
    • Select route minimizing exposure. Do not cross in front of team members.
  2. 2

    Communicate your movement

    • Use voice or hand/arm signals.
    • Return fire, move to cover. Yell direction, distance, description.
  3. 3

Suppress the enemy as required throughout movement

  4. 4

    Conduct movement using appropriate techniques

RUSH (fastest — open area, time critical):

    • Raise head, select next position. Lower head, draw arms in.
    • Pull firing leg forward, rise, get up quickly.
    • Run 3-5 seconds to next position.
    • Plant feet. Assume prone (point, post, sprawl). Reacquire target.

HIGH CRAWL (good cover, can't stand):

    • Body off ground, weight on forearms and lower legs.
    • Cradle weapon in arms, muzzle off ground.
    • Knees well behind buttocks. Advance alternating elbow/knee.

    LOW CRAWL (lowest silhouette):

    • Body as flat as possible.
    • Grasp sling at upper swivel with firing hand. Hand guard rests on forearm, muzzle off ground.
    • Push both arms forward while pulling firing leg forward. Pull with arms, push with leg.
  5. 5

Occupy firing position within 100m and engage enemy
