M2 .50 CAL MACHINE GUN

1 minute

Conditions: You are a member of a team conducting combat operations. You have a stoppage while engaging targets with your machine gun.

Understanding This Task

The M2 .50 caliber is the Army's heavy machine gun, mounted on vehicles and tripods. Unlike the M249/M240, the M2 uses a retracting slide handle instead of a cocking handle, and requires a double-charge to load (pull the handle twice).

Hangfire Procedure: For a cool weapon (less than 200 rounds in 2 minutes), you must verbalize waiting 10 seconds before pulling the retracting handle. Failure to verbalize = instant NO-GO.

Key terms: Trigger block (not selector), bolt latch release, cartridge extractor, T-slot.

Common NO-GO Mistakes

  • Not verbalizing the 10-second hangfire wait — silence = NO-GO
  • Only pulling retracting slide handle once (must pull TWICE to load)
  • Forgetting to unlock bolt latch release before clearing
  • Not inspecting T-slot during clear
  • Exceeding the 1-minute time standard

Starting Configuration

Weapon: Assembled, headspace and timing set, free of ammunition, on FIRE/full auto, bolt forward.

Ammo: Five-round (minimum) belt of blanks with one dummy round in the middle.

Position: Seated (tripod) or standing (vehicle-mounted), not touching weapon.

Task Basis: 071-022-0001, 071-022-0003, 071-022-0005, 071-022-0004

Timer: 1 Minute

Critical Notes
  • MUST verbalize "I am waiting 10 seconds for a possible hangfire" — silence = NO-GO.
  • Double-charge to load: pull retracting slide handle TWICE.
  • Cool weapon procedure (fired less than 200 rounds in 2 minutes).

PERFORMANCE MEASURES

0/5 GO
  1. 1

    Clear the weapon

    • Place trigger block on SAFE and unlock the bolt latch release.
    • Raise the cover and lift the cartridge extractor.
    • Remove the ammunition belt from the feed way.
    • Place cartridge extractor down and close the cover.
    • Pull and lock the bolt to the rear, leaving retracting slide handle to the rear.
    • Open cover and inspect the chamber and T-slot for rounds.
    • Press bolt latch release and ease bolt forward with retracting slide handle. Close cover.
  2. 2

    Load the weapon

    • Ensure bolt is forward and bolt latch release is locked.
    • Insert double-loop end of ammunition belt into feed way until first round engages belt-holding pawl.
    • First charge: Pull retracting slide handle rearward — bolt all the way to rear. Release handle. Gun is now half-loaded (no round in chamber).
    • Second charge: Pull retracting slide handle to rear again. Release handle. Round is now in chamber — gun is ready to fire.
  3. 3

    Engage the target

    • Place trigger block on FIRE and engage your target.
  4. 4

Take immediate action (cool weapon) CRITICAL

    • VERBALIZE: "I am waiting 10 seconds for a possible hangfire."
    • Pull retracting handle to the rear.
    • Observe that round or case ejects. If yes, continue to next step. If not, proceed to unload (step 5).
    • Return retracting slide handle to forward position.
    • If bolt locks to rear, depress bolt latch to return bolt forward.
    • Attempt to re-engage target. Expend remaining ammunition.
